Bird was an All-Star 12 times. More impressively, he was an All-League 10 times; 9 of those were 1st team All-League. Oscar was a point guard and Hakeem was a center. Ewing was one of the top defensive players among the centers. He also had a very good jump shot. Ewing was one of the top 3 centers in the late 1980s and early-mid 90s; the three were Olajuwon, D. Robinson and Ewing. Shaq was just coming on the scene. Tough one. I guess I would end up going Bird. Seems like a great fit for today’s game, where his 3pt shooting and less reliance on traditional point guards would fit even better with today’s game. Ball handling forwards are even more utilized today. And young bird was a very good defender. well there are arguments about how Lebron James played tougher competition than Jordan in the NBA Finals, or that the NBA was tougher when Jordan played. But I think there is little debate that the 1980s were the greatest time for the NBA. In the 80s, star-studded teams were scattered all over the NBA landscape. Larry Bird had to beat these great players and teams just to get to the NBA Finals. The Western Conference was not as deep but you still had the early 80s Houston Rockets, first with Moses Malone and later on with Hakeem Olajuwon; San Antonio Spurs teams led by George Gervin; the Phoenix Suns led by Walter Davis; and emerging teams such as the Dallas Mavericks, Utah Jazz and Seattle Supersonics.

Those guys regularly brought the ball up the court and then ran the offense in the same manner as a point guard in spite of the fact that they were all about 6’8″. Bird would usually give those roles to one of his guards, although he would occasionally be called upon due to his exceptional ball handling. Bird was an amazing player with the ball in his hands, and the fact that he was a skilled passer and ball handler made him even more dangerous as a scorer, but his game is more like Durant or Paul George than James or Pippen.
