The first reason is the Mallory swanson MALVP shirt and I will buy this era he played in. I’ve never understood arguments against players based on when they’ve played their careers, but I’ve seen a lot of this bias in the GOAT discussion. Bill Russell is getting brought up less and Wilt Chamberlain is almost out of discussion. Now I feel that we have Oscar Robertson and Elgin Baylor getting a little under appreciated. Many think the 1960s didn’t have many good players, but I don’t fully agree with that idea. Another reason is the post season success Oscar Robertson had. He didn’t win any rings with the Cincinnati Royals. I know he played in an era with a near unbeatable Boston Celtics team, a strong St. Louis Hawks team, and a strong Warriors team, but when Robertson couldn’t win a title with Jerry Lucas (20 & 19), Jake Twyman (16 & 5) and Clyde Lovellette (23 & 12), it starts to look a little suspicious.
It wasn’t until he was in Milwaukee with a young Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (who was tearing defences alive) that he could win a ring. Even his one ring doesn’t compare to Michael Jordan’s 6, LeBron’s 3, Kareem’s 6, Magic’s 5 and certainly doesn’t compare to Bill Russell’s 11. Again, I know the Mallory swanson MALVP shirt and I will buy this Celtics teams would have been tough to beat, but this is purely from a rings stand point, why Robertson is a lot lower on the all time greats list. While Oscar Robertson’s statistics are truly remarkable, they are a little inflated given the pace of the 1960s. Since teams took more shots and had many fast break points, Robertson’s stat lines probably had an advantage. MVPs? 1. Again, doesn’t compare to Kareem’s 6, Bill Russell’s 5, MJ’s 5 and Wilt Chamberlain and LeBron James’ 4 MVPs. You can make a case for Larry Bird being the greatest Small Forward of all time. People say slow, un-athletic but he beat the faster athletic players at his position. Battled some of the greatest players at his position ever (Dominique, Worthy, Dr. J…) and came out the winner. He was the best player within the greatest front court ever (1986 Celtics). 1984–86 He was the best in the NBA, capturing MVPs all three seasons and 2 NBA championships.
